In 1553, John Calvin faced a backlash of criticism for his part in the trial that led to the burning at the stake of Michael Servetus for heresy. In response to this intense opposition, Calvin hurriedly wrote his Defence of the Orthodox Faith in 1554, in which he argued that it is not only the right, but also the God-given duty of the (religious) civic or state authorities to punish and even execute unrepentant heretics. Calvin’s book received widespread approval from the leading reformers of his time, as well as their heartfelt congratulations.
